McKay’s Birth Film

I debated whether to share this publicly since it’s such a sacred, private event, but I really think it was so beautifully done and I want people to see what home birth is like. I will be posting a written version of my birth story when I get my photos back, so I won’t add any details here. Instead, I’ll share what I shared at the Empowering Fearless Birth event last night right after they showed my film.

If someone had told me 9 years ago that I would one day give birth at home, I would have told them they were crazy. The last 9 years have taken me on an amazing journey of learning and self-discovery. With the birth of each of my children, I learned more about myself and fell more in love with childbirth. I once had someone tell me that they loved birth because it gives women the confidence to be mothers. If we can birth our babies, we can do anything. I truly believe this.

I would like to thank a few people who made this experience possible. First, I want to thank my amazing midwife Roxanna Maurer. She was the perfect person to take us on this journey. She gave me the knowledge and power to take charge of my own pregnancy and prepare to welcome this little one into the world. I spent many hours in the basement of her home discussing much more than pregnancy and birth. She is now one of my dearest friends. She has a calm, quiet manner that helped us feel at ease. She is both confident and humble and respects the birth process and each woman’s personal journey.

I must also thank my two amazing doulas, Mary and Megan. I couldn’t have done it without them. Mary, your strong, loving hands were there for me to balance the power I felt inside with each surge of my body. Your soothing voice reminded me that I am beautiful and that I can do anything. You made it possible for my husband to be fully present for me without having to worry about what to do next.

Megan, you were my cheerleader, giving me confidence and blessing my home with your amazing energy. Thank you for photographing this event so I will always be able to look back on it with awe.

I remember one time during my labor when things were getting really hard. I cried out for help and instantly felt my doulas supporting me with their hands and their hearts. As a doula myself, I know how difficult it can be to support a woman during her most difficult journey. Thank you for doing it so perfectly.

Of course, I also need to thank Sarah for capturing this sacred event on film. Sarah, you are one of the most talented people I know, and we are so blessed to have you in our community. Thank you for showing women that birth can be amazing and beautiful.

Finally, I need to thank my husband for supporting me in this journey. Nathan, I know this isn’t what you would have chosen, and that it made you uncomfortable. But you put your doubts and fears aside for me and for that I am truly grateful. Thank you for being my rock, my home, and my eternal partner. We make beautiful babies, and there is no one I would rather be on this journey with than you.
